Job Description

About Us:

Our team is dedicated to exploring the vast opportunities, ensuring the safety, and shaping the regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI). We bring together a diverse range of expertise, including economists, social researchers, and operational researchers, to address the multifaceted challenges and potentials of AI in the UK.

We are currently looking for a highly skilled and experienced AI Policy and Research Expert to join our interdisciplinary team on a full-time basis. This role will involve leading research and analysis across multiple domains of AI policy, with a focus on the economics of AI, evidence synthesis, and public attitudes toward AI.

Position Overview:

As an AI Policy and Research Expert, you will contribute to developing and implementing strategies that guide the safe and effective adoption of AI technologies in the UK. You will work across three key areas:

  1. Economics of AI Development and Adoption
  2. AI and Data Science for Evidence Synthesis and Modelling
  3. Analysis of Public AI Use and Attitudes

This role requires a versatile individual with a strong background in one or more of these areas, excellent research skills, and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Economics of AI Development and Adoption

  • Analyse how UK-specific conditions, such as infrastructure and regulatory certainty, impact the domestic market for AI products and services.
  • Investigate the drivers of successful AI adoption, including AI model capabilities, the availability of AI products/services, and deployment skills.
  • Develop and evaluate plausible scenarios for AI adoption in the UK, considering both economic and wider societal impacts.
  • Explore the relationship between AI infrastructure development and adoption in the UK, including the implications for UK-based compute demand.

2. AI and Data Science for Evidence Synthesis and Modelling

  • Design and implement systems that leverage AI tools and human expertise to continuously monitor and synthesize research in AI-related fields.
  • Apply advanced data science techniques to extract insights from existing datasets, such as business-level or job-level data and integrate these insights into evidence products and AI impact models.
  • Identify and explore novel datasets that could enhance understanding of AI developments and safety, such as the OECD’s AI Incidents Monitor.

3. Analysis of Public AI Use and Attitudes

  • Conduct research to identify factors influencing safe public use of AI, including skills, trust, and access, and determine their relative importance.
  • Evaluate the potential impact of various policies on these factors and propose measures to foster public trust and understanding of AI technologies.
  • Develop methods to assess public attitudes toward AI, focusing on the trade-offs inherent in AI policy, and provide insights to inform policy development.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Economics, Data Science, Social Research, Public Policy, AI, or a related discipline.
  • Experience:
    • Significant experience in conducting research, analysis, or policy development in one or more of the specified areas.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with complex datasets and apply data science techniques to extract meaningful insights.
    • Proven experience in engaging with stakeholders and communicating complex research findings effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Skills:
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
    • Knowledge of AI technologies, their applications, and implications for society and the economy.
