Who are PPL?

Founded in 1934, PPL is the UK music industry’s collective management organisation (CMO) for over 110,000 performers and record companies. We license recorded music in the UK when it is played in public (shops, bars, nightclubs, offices etc.) or broadcast (BBC, commercial radio, commercial TV etc.) and ensure that revenue flows back to our members. These include both independent and major record companies, together with performers ranging from emerging grassroots artists through to established session musicians and influential festival headliners. To enable this, we capture and maintain a vast data set, including metadata about 15m sound recordings, their territorial rights holdings, performer’s contributions to them, and their use for broadcast and public performance in the UK and internationally.

Insight & Innovation

In an increasingly digital industry, with data volumes and the number of sources of data constantly growing, PPL has many opportunities to use data to drive more efficient and effective business operations, and provide increased value to our members. The Insight & Innovation department delivers impactful analytics and insight, using leading tools such as Birst, Tableau, Airflow, Spark, and Python, on the analytics platform we have built up over the last few years. The products delivered on that platform range from simple reporting/BI and dashboarding through to “Edison”, our recommendation engine that uses Data Science techniques to suggest specific actions to business users.

What you’ll be doing…

The Analytics Manager will work for the Head of Insight & Innovation, taking ownership of PPL’s analytics platform, and having full responsibility for the design, delivery, and operation of high-quality and impactful analytics products to the business.

  • Work with business users to identify opportunities for new/enhanced analytics products, and to capture, manage, and prioritise requirements. Organise and facilitate workshops with business users to define specific needs. Maintain product roadmaps to articulate vision, plan ahead, help provide direction, and set user’s expectations.
  • Lead the Analytics team to design, deliver, and operate high quality, reliable analytics products that meet business needs. Ensure the team follow a structured delivery process and utilise best-practice methods and tools, so that delivery is efficient and predictable.
  • Gain deep familiarity with PPL’s datasets in order to understand the potential for and feasibility of analytics solutions. You’ll need to get hands-on with delivery when necessary.
  • Work with analysts and engineers to identify and explore opportunities to expand the use of new data science techniques across PPL’s analytics platform.
  • Define best practice standards for the visual design of analytics products, and mentor others in their application, so that the team’s output shines.
  • Mentor and coach others within the Insight & Innovation team in the appropriate application of statistical methods and techniques, and help them draw appropriate conclusions from their analyses.
  • Play an active role on the Insight & Innovation management team, contributing to departmental planning and strategy. Assist in the recruitment, training, development, and motivation of people across the department. Act as an enthusiastic, positive and motivated role model.

What you’ll need…

You’ll need a true passion for data and analytics, and the willingness to get your hands dirty at times. You will need to work as a part of a broad team, and be able to talk our business’ language when required.

  • Experience of leading the design, development, and operation of complex, high volume, ETL and data analysis and reporting solutions in a data critical environment
  • Experience of designing dashboards and data visualisation solutions for business users, and identifying and explaining meaningful and actionable insights from analytical work that can improve business processes
  • Excellent written, listening, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information concisely and adjust communication style and message to make applicable to all levels from executive to junior
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders across multiple pieces of work, and managing their expectations
  • Ability to outline a solution and to model data to meet the analysis needs of users, including dimensional modelling (such as Kimball methodologies)
  • Expert user of SQL databases and analytics tools, and familiar/proficient with at least one data processing language (e.g. Python, R, HIVE, T-SQL, PL/SQL, etc.)
  • Experience of leading a team of high-performing developers/engineers
  • Demonstrable passion for using data to solve problems and deliver value
