De Beers’ Pricing & Development department aims to create a world-class analytics hub, with Data Science at its core. With that said, we are now seeking a passionate Data Scientist to join our well-established team of pricing specialists. Reporting into the Data Science Manager, you’ll play a key part in using modern statistical methods and tools to answer key business questions.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Understanding the business context of a hypothesis, problem or request, and build out a strategy for analyzing it
  • Access data from multiple different sources, e.g. CSV, SQL, Excel, MS Access, web
  • Cleanse and reshape data for analysis
  • Descriptive statistics and visualizations
  • Modelling - Inferential statistics & traditional modelling (e.g. linear regression, PCA)
  • Non-linear analysis: Model non-linearity through e.g. decision trees, clustering, non-linear regression
  • Communication: Take findings back to business & communicate to stakeholders
  • Reproducibility: Conduct analysis as part of a reproducible analytical pipeline
  • Automation: Automate analysis as it becomes a regular requirement

What we’re looking for

  • Business Acumen: Understand how the business makes money, and how analysis can add value to the business
  • Data Literacy: Able to structure, process, manage and understand data (importing, cleansing, manipulation, and validation)
  • Highly Numerate: An affinity for numbers and statistically capable
  • Intellectual Curiosity: Self-motivated investigation of ideas
  • Analytically Minded: Ability to apply technical expertise to analyze data, anticipate and diagnose problems, handle ambiguity and provide solutions aimed at the improvement to processes, systems and working practices

Skills & Attributes

  • Experience in extracting and manipulating data from common business sources such as SQL databases, CSV and Excel files
  • Experience in analyzing time-series data, using statistical techniques to identify trends and patterns
  • Experience in and understanding of forecasting and modelling, preferably in a business, economic or agent-behavioural context
  • Experience using statistical techniques and algorithms e.g. linear & non-linear regression, clustering, machine learning, etc.
  • An academic/mathematical understanding of statistical techniques and algorithms
  • Ability to communicate methods and results to non-experts
  • Experience in building visualizations and publication-quality graphics
  • Programming skills in e.g. R, Python, SQL, C, etc. Ability and willingness to learn R and/or Python
  • Ability to produce well documented, reproducible, structured analysis
  • A commitment to ongoing learning and skills development as the profession, business and role changes

Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience in Data Science role or similar relevant academic qualifications and demonstrable experience solving business-related problems
  • One or more of the following qualifications:
  • University degree, preferably in STEM, economics, or related fields (Bachelors or equivalent)
  • Boot camp, MOOC, or other provable self-directed learning in data science or related fields
  • Demonstrable on-the-job skills development or formal training in data science or related fields
  • Advanced degree in STEM, economics, or related field (Masters or higher)
  • Experience in testing hypotheses using data regularly collected in a business environment, particularly where controlled experiments / A/B tests cannot be conducted
  • An understanding of the diamond industry would be beneficial but not essential
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Azure stack would be advantageous

The business area you’ll support

This role will sit within the Pricing and Development business area of De Beers. It plays a critical role in providing analytical insight through rigorous and innovative business analytics, culminating in a pricing platform that enables cyclical price recommendations that are not only optimal in terms of revenue generation but also sustainable for our customers.
