Job description

The Information Management & Information Technology (IM&IT) function is an exciting and diverse function that employs professionals from information management, information technology, information assurance and cyber security to management information and statisticians. We act as the ‘digital partner’ to DE&S, helping the whole organisation to embed new business processes, tools and technology while at the same time keeping us legal and our information protected.

As a Data Scientist you will work under the ambitious Business Intelligence and Analytics programme acting at the forefront of innovation. You will be involved in areas such as Data Warehousing/Extract Transform Load processing, visual analytics, predictive analytics and machine learning. Additionally you will be pivotal in supporting a portfolio of analytics projects across many functions of DE&S, identifying relevant technology and developing strategies for implementation.

Some of the key activities as a Data Scientist you will be involved with include:

  • Working with complex data sets and leading the development of advanced BI capability, through creating and deploying self-service reports and dashboards
  • Debugging, monitoring, and troubleshooting BI solutions
  • Lead the development and implementation of complex data models
  • Design and perform appropriate testing to meet technical and customer requirements
  • Maintain knowledge of the systems and data architectures, creating new Data Models and improving existing structures
  • Augment user training as appropriate

Responsibilities

You will be an effective communicator with strong verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to problem solve. Up to date knowledge of current industry standards and best practice would also be beneficial.

Essential: you will hold a degree, or equivalent accreditation, within a STEM field subject: Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics, or similar statistical background.

You will demonstrate experience of data collection to meet customer needs, data analysis and effective dissemination, and experience of one or more of the following programme languages:

- Python
- R
- SQL

Highly desirable: you should be able to demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Data analytics – such as statistical model selection, supervised/un-supervised/deep machine learning, network analysis, and natural language processing (NLP). Strong programming ability (R, Python or other data analysis relevant languages).
  • Data management/curation – such as the manipulation and analysis of complex, high volume and high dimensionality data, data modelling (including semantic technologies), relational and non-relational databases, cloud storage and data management, interoperability and standardisation for data, metadata management.
  • Data/Systems engineering – such as the design of algorithms, implementation of big data solutions, multi-core/distributed processing, SQL and noSQL database systems, statistical analysis languages and tooling.
  • Story-telling and data visualisation – including the visualisation of insights drawn from data and building of data driven products.

User Research methods – keen perception for the needs of those using analysis or digital tools, and an awareness of qualitative techniques for understanding how information will be used in a given context.
