If you are an experienced data scientist or marine/hydrographic scientist looking to get into data science this is an exciting opportunity join the UK Hydrographic Office at our award-winning offices and be part of a growing, industry leading data science team.

The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products (found on over 90% of ships trading internationally) ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

As a Data Scientist, you will work across the whole organisation to embed data science at the UKHO. You will be working with cutting edge technology on a wide range of fascinating and impactful projects in the marine domain, utilising machine learning techniques and distributed/serverless data pipelines to process a wide variety of data, including bathymetry data, lidar, satellite images, autonomous vessel data and many more.

Your average day may involve the following:

  • Evaluating and understanding new business challenges and exploring new data science techniques
  • Working in an agile team designing solutions to complex big data challenges and applying deep learning techniques
  • Working with internal stakeholders to understand user requirements, presenting methods/results/uncertainty to end users
  • Working alongside our Data Engineering practice to implement industry leading MLOps approaches
  • Producing prototype solutions alongside the Data Engineering team
  • Delivering research projects relating directly to the marine geospatial environment

As we are building an industry leading data science team, you will also have the opportunity to support collaborations and relationships across government, MoD and wider.

To be considered, you must hold a degree in Mathematics/Statistics or in a scientific or engineering discipline or have significant practical experience of working as a Data Scientist/Analyst. You will also be capable of confidently programming in either one or more of the following: R, Python, Matlab, Scala, and be able to pick up other programming languages quickly. Equally important is production experience of data analytics, data processing, data visualisation, scientific research methods and machine learning.

In return, the UKHO is a great place in which to explore your career potential. While our projects are career-defining, the work/life balance that we can offer you is equally exceptional. You will join a diverse and award-winning data science team, working within the brand new, award winning UKHO Building in Taunton in beautiful Somerset. We are also open to fully/mixed remote and flexible working.
