We have a permanent role available within our expanding Data Science Hub within the MoJ Data & Analytical Services Directorate at Band C/Band Cb (subject to qualifying conditions)/HEO level.
The base location of the successful applicants will be 10 South Colonnade, London, although the successful applicants are expected to spend a proportion of their time co-located in 102 Petty France while in this role. In addition, flexible working arrangements are available between 102 Petty France, MoJ Hubs and home.
Interviews are likely to take place from week commencing 9th December 2019. We will keep a merit list for a year for those who successfully pass the interview board but who are not offered a post.
One of the Ministry of Justice key priorities is to become strongly data and evidence driven by ensuring it is used to improve our business performance and the justice system for the public; we become more open and transparent; and we change the culture of the department so that we innovate and are inquisitive about our data.
The Data Science Hub was set up to meet these priorities and sitting at the heart of MoJ’s push to bring Data Science to bear on some of the Ministry’s thorniest problems. We are multi-disciplinary team of 20+ people from a range of professional and backgrounds. Sitting together with our new AWS based Analytical Platform team and our Data Engineering teams, the Data Science Hub provides wide ranging Data Science products to the business.
The team delivers a range of data products across the business including leading a series of multi-disciplinary ‘data studio’ projects that focus on delivering high impact products or insight that directly influence corporate, operational and policy decisions using appropriate techniques from a wide-ranging data science toolkit.
In the last two years the Data Science team has grown substantially as it has delivered a series of high impact products across the data science spectrum including automation, advanced visualisation, machine learning, natural language processing and optimisation. Built on our analytical platform many of these tools are productionised and widely used across the business.
We continue to ensure that we are in a position to capitalise on the continued opportunities to apply the wide-ranging data science toolkit to MoJ’s biggest challenges as our digital and data engineering team deliver robust near live data pipelines from the Ministries major operational systems.

As Data Scientists in the team you will form part of small, agile teams that deliver robust insights and innovative solutions that are directly deployed to end-users (operational, policy, corporate). These posts will be part of a wide ranging, multi-disciplinary team responsible for transforming data and digital services for our Probation staff and service users as part of the Probation Reform Programme.
Your work will focus on delivering high-value projects that directly impact operational decisions, provide new policy insights and drive efficiencies, whilst accelerating data science capability building across analytical services
You will be responsible for developing and applying your wide-ranging toolkit (data visualisation, machine learning, text mining, NLP) to solve business problems, including delivering working Apps/Products onto the desk of our policy and operational customers. In addition to applying familiar tools, you will have the opportunity to learn a range of cutting edge tools, such as Docker, Kubernetes, Apache Spark, Apache Airflow, and how to work with AWS resources
We are committed to giving our specialists the tools they need to make full use of their skills, and all data scientists have access to the MoJ Analytical Platform as well as Macbooks onto which they can install their choice of tools – including R, Python, Tableau and D3.js
