We have a permanent role available within our expanding Data Science Hub within the MoJ Data & Analytical Services Directorate at Band C/Band Cb (subject to qualifying conditions)/HEO level.

The base location of the successful applicants will be 10 South Colonnade, London, although the successful applicants are expected to spend a proportion of their time co-located in 102 Petty France while in this role. In addition, flexible working arrangements are available between 102 Petty France, MoJ Hubs and home.

Interviews are likely to take place from week commencing 9th December 2019. We will keep a merit list for a year for those who successfully pass the interview board but who are not offered a post.

About us

The Data Science Hub was set up to meet these priorities and sitting at the heart of MoJ’s push to bring Data Science to bear on some of the Ministry’s thorniest problems. We are multi-disciplinary team of 20+ people from a range of professional and backgrounds. Sitting together with our new AWS based Analytical Platform team and our Data Engineering teams, the Data Science Hub provides wide ranging Data Science products to the business.

The team delivers a range of data products across the business including leading a series of multi-disciplinary ‘data studio’ projects that focus on delivering high impact products or insight that directly influence corporate, operational and policy decisions using appropriate techniques from a wide-ranging data science toolkit.

In the last two years the Data Science team has grown substantially as it has delivered a series of high impact products across the data science spectrum including automation, advanced visualisation, machine learning, natural language processing and optimisation. Built on our analytical platform many of these tools are productionised and widely used across the business.

We continue to ensure that we are in a position to capitalise on the continued opportunities to apply the wide-ranging data science toolkit to MoJ’s biggest challenges as our digital and data engineering team deliver robust near live data pipelines from the Ministries major operational systems.

About you

We are looking for individuals who have a track record of working closely with customers and collaboratively delivering innovative solutions that have a real impact on the business

As Data Scientists in the team you will form part of small, agile teams that deliver robust insights and innovative solutions that are directly deployed to end-users (operational, policy, corporate). These posts will be part of a wide ranging, multi-disciplinary team responsible for transforming data and digital services for our Probation staff and service users as part of the Probation Reform Programme.

Your work will focus on delivering high-value projects that directly impact operational decisions, provide new policy insights and drive efficiencies, whilst accelerating data science capability building across analytical services

You will be responsible for developing and applying your wide-ranging toolkit (data visualisation, machine learning, text mining, NLP) to solve business problems, including delivering working Apps/Products onto the desk of our policy and operational customers. In addition to applying familiar tools, you will have the opportunity to learn a range of cutting edge tools, such as Docker, Kubernetes, Apache Spark, Apache Airflow, and how to work with AWS resources

We are committed to giving our specialists the tools they need to make full use of their skills, and all data scientists have access to the MoJ Analytical Platform as well as Macbooks onto which they can install their choice of tools – including R, Python, Tableau and D3.js

We are looking for a range of experience across the data science spectrum including most of the following skills:

  • Experience in working with and analysing large and complex data sources
  • Strong programming knowledge in high level analytical languages (such as Python, R and SQL)
  • Strong knowledge, clear understanding and a track record of delivering data science tools into production e.g. machine learning; text mining, natural language processing; advanced data visualisation
  • Ability to develop own capability to tackle business problems using across a broad range of advanced analytical techniques.
  • Ability to think creatively to identify and deliver new, innovative analytical projects from existing and new data sources
  • Track record of using quality assurance and automated testing in analytical work, including producing robust and reproducible analysis using modern version control software.

Key Responsibilities

  • Specific responsibilities will be tailored to reflect your strengths and development needs as data scientists, but broadly your role will involve:
  • Working collaboratively with other Data Scientists to implement high-performance machine learning and statistical models into production;
  • Working closely with customers and other professionals across the business to deliver innovative analytical tools, apps and policy insight into the business;
  • Contributing to the vision for data infrastructure, data science, and analytics, recommending ways to improve the quality of our outputs;
  • Contributing to the strong collaborative working environment within the team, and interacting positively with a variety of stakeholders to build community, capability and credibility;
  • Championing best practices such as version control, unit testing, code review, and well documented applications;
  • Keeping abreast of data science wider landscape and emerging technologies.
  • Candidates are not expected to have experience with the full range of technologies of the Analytical Platform, but we are looking for candidates who are excited about the opportunity to quickly learn new things with the support of our technical experts.


The role is open to

  • Non-analysts
  • existing analysts from all professions (GORS/GSS/GSR/GES);
  • Non-analysts who would like to join the Government Operational Research Service through the interview process

If applying under Points 2 or 3 above, candidates must also meet the Analytical Service professional and/or educational requirements at this Band for Operational Researchers, Statisticians, Social Researchers or Economists.
