What are we looking for?

We are looking for a statistician or data scientist, with experience of non-experimental evaluation methods, to join the increasingly busy FFT Education Datalab team. This is an exciting time to work at FFT, we are continually developing our Aspire system and have recently added the powerful Analytics data analysis tool to the list of products that we deliver. The Datalab team provides research and statistical consultancy to a range of clients including the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF).

This role will be based in Westminster, London. This is a full time (37.5 hours per week) permanent position, with flexible working hours between 8.30am and 6pm and some opportunity for home working.

The Role

Reporting to the Chief Statistician, you will carry out research and analysis of educational policies, interventions and programmes. A large part of the role will involve undertaking impact evaluations using non-experimental methods and administrative data from the National Pupil Database (NPD). These will typically be interventions or programmes that aim to improve attainment, but may also improve other outcomes, such as attendance. Interventions and programmes may be aimed at all pupils within a school (or a year group within a school) or targeted at individuals. You will also contribute to the development of reports and analysis for schools in Aspire, including improving existing processes where appropriate. Translate customer requirements into report design.

The main responsibilities for this role are:

  • Produce analysis of how the schooling system in England performs and functions using the National Pupil Database for a range of clients
  • Undertake impact evaluations of educational interventions and programmes, preferably using R
  • Write reports clearly and concisely, even when they are based on complex statistical methodology
  • Work with the Datalab team to ensure that work meets team objectives and overall company objectives
  • Support the ongoing development of FFT Aspire and Analytics

Skills, knowledge and experience

Essential:

  • Knowledge and experience of using non-experimental methods applied to administrative data to estimate the impact of interventions and programmes
  • Experience of undertaking statistical (or econometric) research of educational policy and communicating findings to a range of audiences including policymakers, schools and academics both verbally and in writing
  • Good prioritising, planning and organisational skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and as part of a team
  • Ability to work responsively with clients, partners and team members
  • Ability to derive and communicate new insight from data
  • An understanding of how to represent data visually using a range of techniques
  • Actively seeks own self development in the areas of data science, data visualisation and education policy
  • Degree in a numerate discipline

Desirable:

  • Good knowledge of the English education system
  • Experience of working with administrative date sources such as the National Pupil Database, school workforce Census, the individual learner Record and the HESA Student Record
  • Familiarity with other tools used for data manipulation, analysis and visulisation such as (but not limited to) SQL Server, Python, Excel, Tableau
