We’re looking to appoint a Deputy Director for modelling in UKHSA. This is a new post following a restructure of UKHSA’s functions. We are looking for the postholder to develop the modelling function improve the efficiency and impact of UKHSA’s modelling efforts to support business and usual modelling activity, preparedness activity as well as incident response. It is a challenging and high-profile job in UKHSA and will require expertise in infectious disease dynamics coupled with the ability to operate effectively and delivery high quality analytical outputs for use by UKHSA and across government.

Job description

As Deputy Director of Modelling, you will be responsible for leading a newly formed, combined Modelling Division. You will be responsible for delivering world-leading capabilities to improve health security and support the response to health threats, working closely with colleagues from across UKHSA and beyond.

As a senior analytical leader within the organisation, you will champion cutting-edge analysis, modelling, statistics, economics and threat assessments, applying the outcome to inform high-profile decision making.

You will lead and inspire multi-disciplinary teams to support current health responses and ensure preparedness for future threats and pandemic responses.

You will oversee the mathematical modelling capabilities of the Agency. You will be responsible for the strategic, analytical, and pastoral activities of modellers across the organisation and advocate for, and deliver on, an expanded remit pertaining to a host of UKHSA’s strategic priorities.

You will bring your individual expertise as an influential and experienced leader to positively shape the UK’s health landscape by impacting UKHSA and government decision making on both a national and local level.

The ideal candidate would have strong experience and expertise in infectious disease dynamics as well as a proven ability to operate effectively and deliver high quality outputs for use by UKHSA and across government.

This role will influence the following key stakeholders:

Internal

  • Ministerial office, senior policy, operational and scientific colleagues, including epidemiologists.
  • Data, Analytics & Surveillance function Directors and Deputy Director peers.
  • Director Generals, Directors, and Deputy Directors across UKHSA.
  • Modelling communities across UKHSA.

External

  • Relevant senior stakeholders within ONS, Cabinet Office, other government departments, non-departmental bodies, and potential funding organisations to agree and ensure appropriate methods and inform cross-government strategy.
  • Key partners in the Devolved Administrations.
  • Modelling leadership across government.
  • Academia.
  • Private sector leaders

Essential criteria:

  • A track record of managing, leading and inspiring high-performing delivery-focused teams (including the ability to communicate and manage staff with specialist expertise), demonstrating the competencies expected at Deputy Director level, noting that this experience may be gained outside the civil service
  • Experience in leading teams through organisational change in an inclusive and empathetic way
  • Relevant professional and technical experience in modelling, including through peer-reviewed publications and/or experience in Government
  • Ability to work at pace to meet deadlines across multiple projects
  • A track record of successfully forging relationships and coordinating projects with a range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience of supporting senior leaders in translating strategic direction into operational plans for delivery and execution (including experience in advocating successfully for resources following prioritisation exercises)

Desirable Criteria

Additional knowledge of the following is preferable but not mandatory:

  • Membership of one of the government analytical professions (GES, GORS, GSR or GSS) or willingness to become a badged analyst
  • Experience of supporting the delivering of change and transformation initiatives from end to end, into a live operation.
