This role will directly support the Head of Data Labs in the design and implementation advanced analytics as part of the Group-wide Data and Analytics strategy. We are seeking a high calibre creative thinker who can turn business problems into solutions by applying sophisticated and targeted analytics.

The role will be project based, working as part of the wider Data Labs team to put analytics into practice across Hiscox. The focus is on improving the P&L as well as supporting the wider adoption of analytics in the company. You will be highly visible to senior management including the Chief Underwriting Officer, Chief Financial Officer and the Chief Executive Officer and could be expected to drop everything to answer key questions. You will be asked your opinion routinely and substantial business change will happen as a result of your work.

The successful candidate will be highly driven and excited about developing the analytics agenda in a leading specialist insurer.

Key areas of work:

  • Designing analytical solutions to high value business problems
  • Delivering components of analytics products including user interfaces, analytical routines (predictive / machine learning models) and back end databases
  • Contributing to the wider data community as an analytical thinker, driving best practice and adoption of new approaches
  • Be an ambassador for Hiscox in the external data community

Person specification:

Required skills:

  • A 2.1 or higher degree in a Data Science or STEM based subject
  • An understanding of the R language (beginner to intermediate) with a willingness to continue learning both on the job and through structured learning
  • Proven experience of applying analytics to deliver business value
  • Comfort with presenting to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Flexibility to work extended hours to meet deadlines

Desirable Skills / Experience:

  • Hands on experience in the Insurance Sector, Financial Services, Consultancy or Data-Driven Start-up
  • Experience of implementing a data science approach including a working knowledge of machine learning algorithms

Recent / typical projects include:

  • Predictive model of customer churn: multi-class classifiers, time series analysis, UI build and data engineering.
  • Portfolio optimisation on large scale property insurance book: segmentation and optimisation analytics
  • Product recommendation tool for retail insurance using association modelling
  • Keyword analysis of insurance claims over 10’s of millions of data points
  • Resource modelling complex human resource requirements: time series modelling and forecast, hierarchical models, UI and backend build
