The Department of Communication and Media is seeking to appoint a lecturer to join an established and widely-recognised Department which has undergone considerable expansion and development. You will have a background in computer science or a related field of research and a willingness to work closely with colleagues from communication and media studies in both teaching and research. Your specific research area should demonstrate relevant contributions to analysis of communication and media, in particular language, images or videos. This includes techniques such as natural language processing, image and video analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, data mining, or data visualisation. In addition, experience in designing and developing solutions for managing the collection, storage, access and analysis of large datasets is required. Candidates must be willing to work across disciplinary boundaries and to contribute 4* publications for the Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Preference will be given to applicants whose research and teaching focuses on the use of computational techniques for the analysis of language, images or videos. The post will strengthen the department's teaching in these areas by supporting existing modules and introducing new modules reflecting the candidate's specific research expertise in data science, integrated with critical approaches in the social sciences and humanities. The post will strengthen interdisciplinary research undertaken in the Department.

Appointment should start 1 September 2020 or as soon as possible after this date. Appointing grade will be set according to experience, skills, and specialist knowledge. The position is permanent subject to satisfactory performance.

Closing date 10 August 2020
