The IDLES is an EPSRC funded project focusing on energy system analysis that aims to develop a tool that can indicate optimal forms of future energy systems and provide policy advice on how the development of the energy system should progress.

We wish to appoint a Research Associate to work within the IDLES project to contribute in particular to developing a finer and better understanding of the drivers of energy demand, both in the industrial and residential sectors.

You must have a PhD in Economics, Mathematics or other quantitative social science discipline (or be close to completion) and a keen interest in topics related to the data science and economics of climate change and energy . You will be interested to explore firm-level and consumer-level choices.

You will be working with an interdisciplinary team from Imperial College Business School and the departments of Civil Engineering and Mathematics. You will be jointly working on academic publications as well as policy reports and presentations. Experience and interest in data science and machine learning is desirable.

You must have advanced quantitative and analytical skills and experience in dealing with large datasets, as well as advanced experience in using common econometrics and statistics software and programming languages (e.g. Python, STATA, R, etc.) and have an ability to interpret and analyse patterns or trends in data. Experience in the analysis of large micro level datasets is essential. Ideally, you have already worked with firm level datasets or experience running and managing Randomised Control Trials.

The post will commence as soon as possible.

Duties and responsibilities

  • You will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team with senior staff members on the energy system analysis, and in particular on the understanding of energy demand.
  • You will be responsible for the data collection, data assembly, management and analysis of large-scale data sets and/or randomised control trials.
  • You will be responsible for conducting primary statistical and econometric analyses
  • You will be responsible for drafting academic papers along with interim and final reports on the progress of the work
  • You will present results to a variety of audiences including research funders, academics, and policy makers, at seminars, national and international conferences
  • You will have joint authorship of academic papers from your research, which will be published in leading international journals

Essential requirements

Experience

  • An understanding of the context of climate change and energy transition
  • Experience in constructing and maintaining large data sets
  • Experience of statistical / econometric analysis (e.g. using STATA)
  • Experience in dissemination of academic research to a variety of audiences

Skills and Abilities

  • Expertise in statistical or econometric analyses
  • Knowledge of machine learning is desirable
  • Ability to locate data and to maintain and document data for use by others
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrable evidence of ability to take initiative, manage projects and teams, critically appraise research and support others
