The Principal Data Scientist will be part of the Trading & Supply Capability Centre team/IT Digital Engineering VPship. The Principal Data Scientist will be responsible for initiating, development and deployment of data science solutions/products in an agile fashion to the Assets.

What's The Role

As Principal Data Scientist, you will need to work closely with our stakeholders in the business to translate their business challenges and opportunities into data science solutions. You will be responsible to lead the implementation of these solutions by a multidisciplinary team including data scientists and data engineers. The Principal Data scientist will help shape the strategy for developing and managing machine learning models in production, to ensure quality is maintained.

Furthermore, your responsibilities include the following:

  • Developing data science models and predictive quantitative models, specializing in energy market analysis and fundamentals modelling, particularly for Carbon credits trading
  • Providing data science consultancy to business users, including problem structuring, project definition, and scoping
  • Serving as a Technical Lead on Data Science Projects, guiding teams in effective project execution
  • Collaborating within the Data Science and ML team to deploy models to production, utilizing both existing and emerging methods and technologies relevant to Shell's use cases
  • Establishing core infrastructure for feature engineering, model training, deployment, ongoing monitoring, and automation of AI/ML workflows
  • Coordinating with Infrastructure, data engineering, and DevOps teams to enhance deployment velocity, including streamlining processes for deploying models and data pipelines into production
  • Partnering with Product Management to translate product requirements into robust, customer-agnostic machine learning architectures
  • Staying updated on new engineering practices and technologies, continually improving Agile practices, and fostering relationships and alliances in academia, IDT, and industry

What We Need From You

We're excited to connect with candidates who possess the following qualifications and are ready to take on the challenge:

  • Extensive experience as a Data Scientist preferably in Trading and Risk or Energy Industries with good understanding on energy market analysis and carbon trading fundamentals
  • Broad experience and knowledge in Statistics, Machine Learning and Data Engineering
  • Leading a data science program hands-on end to end – Conceptualization, Development and Deployment
  • Directly or indirectly leading a team of data scientists, ML Engineers, with walue realization from data science and converting projects to a large program – scaleup and replicate
  • Solid experience in at least one of the following:
    • Machine Learning and Statistics
    • Probabilistic Modelling (i.e. General Linear Models, Stochastic processes, Bayesian Networks, Hidden Markov Models, Hierarchical Modelling, Time Series Modelling, etc.)
    • Algorithms & Optimization (i.e., linear programming, multi-objective optimization, meta-heuristics, etc.)
  • Experience in end-to-end machine learning model development for predictive modeling in business/industry settings, including feature engineering, model creation, evaluation, and post-production support.
  • Proficient in writing clean, maintainable production-level code in Python/Matlab/R, with expertise in version control, testing, and refactoring.
  • Solid Experience of cloud environment specifically Azure is required along with good knowledge and understanding of Shell.ai, GIT, Azure, CI/CD pipelines
  • Extensive experience working in small, empowered, delivery focused, cross-functional and collaborating teams

  • Gas/Power Trading knowledge - Short-term trading, physical assets trading (CCGT, Wind, Solar, Battery)
  • Risk - Modelling & understanding of risk & risk management
  • Quantitative Skills - Statistical methods to check and investigate numerical data for practical insights
  • Commodity Modelling - Energy (power, gas, environmental products) and meteorology
  • Knowledge of Information Management, data strategy and governance
  • Commercial skills in Value Assurance, Value estimation and Realization, end-to-end value mapping Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for teamwork, as well as the ability to work independently
  • Experience of working in a virtual team and with virtual stakeholders in agile methodology
