Associate/Consulting Associate (Data Science)

Charles River Associates

London, United Kingdom

CRA's European Competition Practice specialises in providing economic advice on matters of competition policy and regulation. We assist firms and their legal advisors in all types of competition proceedings: firms considering merger and acquisition opportunities or involved in merger control proceedings; and firms undergoing investigations relating to cartels, restrictive commercial agreements, abuse of dominance or state aid. We also provide advice to firms involved in regulatory proceedings and sector inquiries. We offer assistance on the estimation of effects and damages in cartel cases, international arbitration and intellectual property disputes.

Are you an aspiring Data Scientist keen to develop and apply your skills to a wide variety of complex problems? Due to increasing demand for technical skills, we are expanding our data science roles at the firm.

We help our clients deal with complex antitrust investigations (including mergers, market investigations, cartels and other litigation) across a wide range of industries. This work increasingly relies on large and complex datasets. You will be working closely with our in-house data scientists and other economic consultants across the business, assisting with specialist aspects of highly varied tasks. Our data comes from a wide range of clients, so doesn’t come in a “standard” shape and size – and neither do the questions we have to answer.

Responsibilities

  • Developing code to efficiently calculate driving times for millions of latitude/longitude pairs
  • Automating various geospatial analysis methods in ArcGIS
  • Web scraping to generate datasets on which economic analysis can be run
  • Creating interactive web applications using d3.js, as well as other data visualisation work using matplotlib, bokeh, seaborn etc.
  • Various tasks using the Google Maps API suite, particularly the Geocoding & Distance Matrix APIs
  • Solving ad hoc client and business problems involving large datasets
  • Web scraping/interacting with REST APIs
  • Contributing to existing codebase/toolset to allow our economists to complete their work more efficiently or present it effectively
  • Mapping and analysing geographic data (e.g. creating isochrones, distance and drive time matrices etc.)
  • Assisting with training staff in technical skills, and advising on best practices
  • Processing a dataset with 300m+ records using MongoDB, plus developing efficient extraction methods for analysis

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate will be a self-starter, passionate about data science, and have an outstanding ability for problem solving. Experience with the fundamentals of Python/R is essential, but training will be provided wherever necessary. You must be willing to work flexibly and creatively with our team of highly trained economists to provide quality outputs for our clients. Accuracy is key: much of our work-product will be tested in a Court or regulatory setting. Clear communication is also critically important – both with members of the wider team, and ensuring that our work is well documented so it can be understood by our clients and regulatory agencies. Qualifications for this role include the following:

  • Strong academic background in a quantitative subject for example: Maths/Computer Science/Economics/Physics/Data Science (MSc preferred but candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and full-time, professional experience will be considered)
  • 1+ year(s) of professional experience
  • Experience in using Python (plus Pandas/NumPy/Matplotlib stack) for data -analysis, -cleaning, -engineering, -modelling, and -visualisation
  • Excellent communication skills to non-technical audiences - able to collaborate with economic specialists
  • Ability to engage novel problems and concepts and find practical solutions using existing or unfamiliar tools quickly
  • Excellent time management and flexibility

The following experience is preferred but not required:

  • Statistical/Econometric analysis using STATA
  • Use of GIS systems (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS)
  • Experience with any of the following technologies/packages - Git, d3.js, XML, selenium, MongoDB, node.js, AWS, Azure, heroku
  • An interest in economics and competition policy
