Job Title: Lead Data Scientist

Salary: £39,748 - £44,166 gross per annum*

Location: Daresbury Laboratory- Warrington

Contract Type: Open Ended

*This role is eligible for up to £1500 Responsibility and Retention Allowance gross per annum

Do you pride yourself as an excellent communicator, both in writing and speaking? Are you able to lead and develop your own team? Are you an experienced Data Scientist?

STFC (part of UK Research and Innovation) are seeking a Lead Data Scientist to manage the Data Science team within the Hartree Centre.

You will work on a range of projects for our Centre, in the general area of data analysis and machine learning. You will work with business development colleagues to develop collaborations with industrial partners and public agencies. In progressing Hartree Centre projects, there will be technical help from systems and project support teams in the department.

There is also the opportunity to collaborate with other Hartree Centre teams who work on artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and software engineering. Initial work will take forward opportunities in a range of sectors: during the previous year the group has worked on life sciences, healthcare, manufacturing and finance among other topics. We have worked with many businesses from small start-ups to large multinationals. Some of the work will be commercial in confidence and subject to IPR rules around public disclosure. The role will involve working closely with teams within commercial companies.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Degree in a mathematical, scientific, or computer science discipline.
  • Experience of data analysis, utilizing a range of compiled and scripting languages.
  • Experience applying mathematics and statistics.
  • Demonstrable ability to master new tools and technologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good time management and ability to deliver against work plans.
  • Able to work with industrial clients.
  • Can work as part of a team and independently.
  • Able to travel in the UK and occasionally abroad.
