The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA)

New Haw, KT15 3NB

Ref: SD596

At the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), our diverse team of over 2,000 skilled and committed professionals come together to achieve a vital goal: to safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit our environment, the UK economy and for all of us who live here.

By joining us you will be part of an organisation with a wide range of vital priorities. Together, we protect endangered wildlife, conduct research into bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases and vaccines, facilitate the international trade in animals, identify and control endemic and exotic diseases, and manage a programme of bee inspections and so much more.

Inclusion, support and the development of our people matter to us. In addition to truly meaningful work, you can look forward to a career built on high-quality training, opportunities for progression and professional mentoring and coaching.

Applying your quantitative expertise to a broad cross-section of animal health and veterinary public health issues within the Biomathematics and Risk Research workgroup, you will:

  • Influence and improve disease surveillance and control in the UK and Europe by providing high quality support for statistical analysis. This will include offering quantitative modelling and consultancy services, ensuring your work consistently meets the appropriate quality standards.
  • Identify, collect and manage data to be used in mathematical and statistical models. You will therefore form good working relationships with a variety of key contacts who have access to this information including Veterinarians, Scientists, Policy Makers and other industry representatives.
  • Manage APHA’s statistical enquiries service, working quickly and efficiently to deliver results within agreed time scales.
  • Work in partnership with the Department of Epidemiological Sciences to support research and surveillance proposals. You will also work with colleagues and external customers to provide comprehensive statistical review of technical reports, scientific papers and presentations.
  • Contribute to APHA’s outbreak modelling capacity, making yourself familiar with existing models and developing new models as required. As such, you will have the flexibility to work irregular hours in the event of an outbreak.

APHA offers a progressive working environment in which you will be exposed to career-defining challenges. You will therefore thrive in this role if you are committed to maintaining and developing your expertise. Keeping up-to-date with advances in statistics and mathematical modelling, you will be keen to embrace development opportunities. As a team-player with solid partnership capabilities, you will have the capacity to manage your own workload and deliver outcomes within deadlines. Crucially, you will have exceptional statistical, analytical and quantitative modelling capabilities, and your capacity to maintain high standards in a fast-paced environment will make you an essential part of this nationally-important team.
